Description
A bird's beak or bill says a great deal about how it gets its food. I am especially fascinated by birds with extreme adaptations for their environment. This African White Spoonbill (Platalea alba) feeds by wading into shallow water and using its bill to dig and stir up debris from the bottom. This is another resident of the San Diego Wild Animal Park's aviary. The birds are free to walk around in the aviary, and the human visitors actually enter their environment to see them. Aviaries like these are a great way to see non-native birds up close and in a somewhat natural setting.
